Any suggestions on buying a small portable stove? I'm just looking for something to boil a cup or two of water on. Hopefully in the $40 price range and can light without a match

The only stoves that small that I use and have had for many years is the Coleman single burner. Although you have to light it it witll outlast any selflighting piece around.Ive camped and cooked for an entire week on one canister of propane.

if you are looking to do any kind of hiking with it you "do not" want a Coleman. they are good for a base camp but way to heavy to be hike with. You want something thing that burns butane. I have a optimus single burner with gas it weighs less than 10 oz. I no longer due much back woods camping and would be willing to part with it for around $20.00. You can pick up the "campingaz at GIJoes for around 10- 15 bucks.

Mcrat you are thinking of a large size coleman, the one Skinner refers to is the same style I have packed and we have bothed used for years backpacking. It is simply a very small self contained burner that screws directly into the small $2 propane canister.
Hit up Sportsmens wharehouse in Salem they have good selection of thease burners all for around $20

Great info here guys, thanks. I'm really liking the idea of using the propane bottles as they're easy to get anywhere in a pinch. Good point about self igniting units breaking too, I hadn't even thought about that.

While doing my 8 year stint in the Infantry, after I got sick of eating MRE's everyday. I packed one of those colemans around for years along with 3 propane bottles and a case of Top Ramen noodles. Not that heavy as I recall. Though if Mcrat's is reasonable sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

dont get me wrong Cole man makes some good shit, How ever propane comes in steel tanks which = weight if you do any real hiking the less weight the better. go to REI or a store similar you will not find any single burning Coleman stoves in the store. If you want a Two Burner stove for a Base Camp Coleman makes the best on the market. what it really comes down to is how much weight you are willing to pack around.
